Within Temptation: Elements & Hydra – Live Album

Within Temptation - Let Us Burn - ArtworkWhile yesterday we presented the live DVD from Within Temptation’s arena tour, today we present the other half of this prestigous disc-set. This live album was recorded most recently in Amsterdam and includes tracks from their latest album, Hydra. While the DVD focused on their older tracks, pre-Hydra, the live audio disc on this set includes some of the tracks from the DVD in addition to tracks from Hydra. A MASSIVE 32-track live album, the play time lasts just over two and a half hours. This set is most definitely catered to the most devoted Within Temptation fans. In addition to being available on DVD, it will also be available as a 2-disc Blu-ray as well as a digital album included. Already released overseas just a little over a week ago, the set has made it into the top 5 albums on the Dutch charts currently.

If you read yesterday’s review, then I’ll be happily going over the other half that wasn’t included, which actually includes a few tracks from the “Elements” side. To start things off, I will say the Hydra album is my favorite album from WT, so this was a total eargsmic experience throughout. Let Us Burn kicks off the live Hydra. Sharon Den Adel’s vocals started out average but then by the end of the track, her vocals hit the notes I was looking for. Paradise (What About Us?), guest features Tarja Turunen but unfortunately she was not present, so they used all the guest vocals from all the tracks in the background. What I liked about this track, and most of the other ones, was the clear definite sound of the orchestra in the background. You can also hear the audience singing along as I am sure they were going wild as well, who could blame them? The awesome transition to one of their bigger hits, Faster, was great. I know I can’t ever get enough of that track, it was great to feel the energy from the audience.

Edge Of The World, In The Middle Of The Night and Dangerous were a great placing in the middle of the album as you have one thats a touching ballad, one that is heavy and in your face, and another that is aggressive and catchy. One of my personal favorites that I abused the hell out of the replay, is the track, Covered By Roses. Don’t forget to checkout the video for this one, it quite the explosve performance, literally. The roundup of the final remaining tracks are also favorites as they close their set with an acoustic rendition of one of their touching ballads, The Whole World Is Watching. Sharon Den Adel, took over the whole track as the original version includes male vocalsits, Dave Pirner and Piotr Rogucki. Continuing the acoustic road, Sinead was also performed, which I was luckily able to experience when they came to the states recently. Closing off the album, they come back full on with one of their original hit, Ice Queen. This stimulating track that gives me goosebumps, was plentiful in energy and epic choirs that make a lasting impact on the listener.

As Within Temptation weekend closes, after listening to them as well as watching them live on DVD and in person, I stand behind my statement 110% when I say Within Temptation are pioneers in metal and I believe can influence the general masses as they have a massive following all over the world, not just in Europe alone. While pyrotechnics and fireworks can spruce up any show, WT do not need it, they alone can get a whole arena wild and vivid. Don’t forget to pick up for copy of Let Us Burn – Elements & Hydra Live In Concert this week. You will be sucked up by the emotion, the energy, the chaos, the performances, the visuals, the music, the definitive sound, everything about this set proves why they are at the forefront of their game. Stay Metal m/

Concert Review: Within Temptation/Amaranthe @ The Vic Theatre

Within-Temptation-is-coming-to-AmericaAmarantheWhat an epic night it was. A large fan of both of the only acts to have played, October 1st was a grand night. I am not being over boisterous or exaggerative when I say the performance and choice of tracks was highly satisfactory. I had arrived to The Vic Theater quite early, as I had the opportunity to interview one of the founders and lead singers of Amaranthe, Jake E. His interview will be posted shortly here at We Love Metal.  Back to the concert portion of the day, when I had arrived there was a small gang of people waiting at the doors, so my arrival was at a perfect time. The venue itself is pretty big, much larger than the previous venue I had been to, two weeks ago. For those in the area, for future reference, there is nothing but annoying meters parking all over the area. Unless you want to park blocks and blocks away on a side street that might not have meter parking or permit parking for that matter, I definitely and utmost recommend getting dropped off or public transportation. As I had a bit of a challenge in finding parking, since these meters only accept quarters and credit cards, my card was maxed out (I know, im stupid), who in their right mind would carry almost $20 worth of quarters to feed these meters, not to mention that the meters only charge you for two hours at a time. There was no way in hell I was going to feed the dam meters every two hours and come in and out of the venue, so to make matters simple, I parked in a public lot for $10 for the night, definitely worth it and gave me peace of mind for the night. What felt like hours and hours that had passed by literally, I had met up with Fred, whom I met at the Delain/Xandria show a few weeks ago, as he is also a large fan of the female symphonic scene. After many long hours, the doors opened at 7PM and everyone was let in like a hoard of hyenas, but not without a security pat-down of course.

Once inside, we made our way to the front, and awaited for Amaranthe’s arrival. I had not noticed but after looking behind me and up, I saw there was another floor for the last minute people to go upstairs and watch the excitement from above. The final hour seemed like forever, but once the stage set-up music died down, lights went out, nothing but darkness and immense screaming from the fans. An entrance that put goosebumps on me, sirens and air raids went off, and within thirty seconds, the red lights started going off like alarms and that is when the energetic

Swedish Amaranthe appeared on stage kicking off the night with a new song, Digital World, off of their upcoming album, Massive Addictive. The track, hence it not being released yet, was an upbeat way to kickstart things, and the fans were still going nuts, yet no one knew the song. Minutes later, the first track that Amaranthe had put out as a band, HungerA killer track, it got the audience finally going, as well as me singing along the chorus. Invinciblewas the next track on the set-list, of course this is another one of their headbanging anthems. Everyone in the crowd was bouncing up and down, just enjoying the immense energy this track gives off. One of the heavier tracks that Amaranthe boasts, 1,000,000 Lightyearsit was time to fly through space and time in a world from afar, as this melodious rich track kept the energy going. By this time, my voice was starting to dry up from screaming, the audience was craving more. I got goosebumps from their next track, being a major fan of Amaranthe, those who keep up with them closely know of the their next track, TrinityAs they released it the day before, it is currently their freshest track yet and I think of of my all-time favorites, both lyrically and instrumentally. When they announced they were going to play it, I went wild, it’s a track I can’t get enough of.

The intensity factor coninued as they played the track, AfterlifeWhat else can I say? The track is vivid and unreal. After all this energy, adrenaline and more, the mood slowed down and got a little more intimate, as their first ballad, Amaranthinetook over the stage momentarily. The audience calmed down, as we watched every member put on a wonderful presence on this track. This is one of those tracks, that I believe can cater to most. While the intimacy faded, it was time to turn up the amps, get that adrenaline pumping again with the first single of their new album, Drop Dead CynicalOnce more, the crowd jumped up and down with the music, I almost felt the ground shaking, it was that intense. The only track to have been played from their debut album, the track, Call Out My NameI found an interesting way to separate the older fans from the newer ones. Another endorphin-rushing track, it’s a little different in style than their newer material, which isn’t bad at all. Unfortunaly all good things must come to an end and the final track of the night from Amaranthe was played. The Nexus drained all my energy, I gave it my all, my voice was starting to crack from the emotion, excitement and energy that Amaranthe sparked from the crowd. Oh man, was a set, one of the best sets out of any band, period.

[tube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM7mfYHKb98[/tube]

It was now time for the other and main act of the night. Within Temptation, was ready to go. After many, many moments and my legs were starting to get tired, the darkness revealed itself once more, and a video projected itself on the stage. It spoke of dragons, and dangers and that is where ‘Paradise‘ landed with the group behind it. The energy from the audience was noticably wilder, and somehow I found myself energized again, singing and waving the horns, by the end of the track, the intensity from the crowd was vivid. I was thinking, hell if the mood was gonna be this intense throughout the set, this is going to be one hell of a show, thats for sure! Let’s continue the epic night with the track, perfectly titled, FasterLead vocalist, Sharon den Adel, really knows how to let out those high notes. One of the tracks, that always gives me goosebumps, Let Us Burnkept the mood going. The video that accompanied the track on stage, was epic and amazing. The next two tracks, In the Middle of the Night and Fire and Ice, are not tracks, I am too fond of, so I’ll go straight to the next track that I enjoyed. Eerily and sympohnically rich in essence,it was time for our judgement in Our Solemn Hourwhich set the ambience for the moment. Before the next track could commence, Sharon took a moment to talk to the audience about current matters in our world. Today you see Religion pushing people away from each other, and causing wars and fights and more, and you see all these rights that people are defending rights such as civl rights, independent rights, female rights, etc, and trying to live and make the world a better place rather then becoming enemies and hating one another. Instead if we took the time to talk to one another, give everyone a chance, become closer to one another, we can all learn from each other, and make this a prosperous life. Her intellectual stimulation set the tone for the next track, Stand My Ground

[tube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZAQ_FseHQY[/tube]

In their latest album, Hydra, they did a cover of Summertime Sadness. Another track I am not fond of, at least the girls in the venue enjoyed the track. Sharon knew the men weren’t going to be happy about it, but she joked about it, glad to see she has humor. A more subtle track, a fusion of Rap and Goth Metal, And We Runkept the flow of the night going. As rapper Xzibit was not present, they used the screens to project his parts of the track. Overall, a more mellow track, with intimate emotion. Once more, it was time to get endorphins rushing and get a little ‘Dangerous‘. This was probably the last track that I personally went wild for, for the night, both because my energy was running low, and the other tracks were a little more tame, which only signaled the night was coming to a close. The remaining tracks of the night included Angels, End of the World, What Have You Done, and Mother EarthAn encore occured of course, there was no surprise there, and the final encore tracks of the night included, Covered By Roses, an acoustic rendition of Sineadand lastly the final track of the night, Ice Queen

[tube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJVtOqgZaY8[/tube]

Overall, the night was full of energetic moments, much better than my previous concert, though both were still good, this one was slightly better on the scale. In terms of who was better between both bands this night, I would choose Amaranthe, for having an intense set-list. Perhaps the next time they roll around the states on their next tour, they will be headliners. One can only hope…..But nonetheless I ended my night with an autographed poster by Within Temptation, and a badass shirt I bought from Amaranthe. Did I mention I got to hang on Amaranthe’s tour bus for a little bit? Oh man, I love what I do. Stay Metal m/

Within Temptation – Hydra

Hydra-Within-TemptationI have been anticipating this album since my EP Review on it a few months ago. Dutch Symphonic sextet, Within Temptation, have recently released their sixth and strongest album to date titled, Hydra. The album takes us on a near one hour journey full of emotion, edge, power and dexterity. Hydra was released recently in America, but was let loose earlier, overseas. According to lead guitarist, Robert Westerholt, the album shows off all their different sides of music. In Greek mythology, The Hydra had many heads each representing a different persona or attitude. This is the perfect representation of their music and album. Overall amongst the heavy metal media, the album scored impressive, pulling in 3.5 to 5 stars and 9’s and 10’s in other media. Not only did the album pull in rave reviews, but the album also beat out many artists like Adele and Katy Perry in the iTunes Charts. The album ranked #9 on that chart, #10 in the US, #2 in Germany and in the UK, and #1 in Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Finland, The Czech Republic, and in their native country of The Netherlands. While the band sells out arenas and venues overseas, I believe this album will be their final push into finally making it in metal scene in the states.

Hydra begins with the strong ballad, my favorite off of their EP demo, Let Us Burn. The song begins with a fade in to a sinister silence that makes me imagine a misty foggy dark scene, and then the initial first notes off the album and the drums work together to bring in my mind and ears, one of the best openings to any album I have heard in a long time. That intro alone really blew me away. The gothic keys really add to the feeling of goosebumps that went through my body. Sharon den Adel then comes in with her opera-like vocals to deliver an unforgettable opening track that stays true to their Goth side. Dangerous is the next track off the album and it surely does not disappoint. At initial listen, I was a bit annoyed at how commericial and upbeat it sounded, but after about the third listen, I really started to get into it. This is a perfect song to workout to or to get some inspiration. The song features former Killswitch Engage singer, Howard Jones. A perfect song for an epic fight scene indeed, and that opening hard intro was just exhasperating. The epic keys backing up the hard chorus really wail it to the listener, I had to stop myself from abusing the heck out of the replay button. There are also hints of old school In Flames in the song too, from what it sounds like. And We Run was a track I had some doubts on because of the appearance of rapper, Xzibit. He definitely pulled it off in this track, for both him and Sharon both coincide nicely and smoothly. His rapping blended well with the hard riffs, you could almost not be able to tell it was rapping. Don’t let that aspect throw you off, this is also a decent track. Paradise (What About Us)was the first single off this album and their EP. If you saw my review of the band’s EP, this track really lies along the lines of symphonic and alternative metal. Plus the appearance of Opera powerhouse, Tarja Turunen, pushes the song towards further heights. The video is set is a post apocalyptic world, felt like a mini movie with suspense. Another phenomenal track. Edge Of The World marks the halfway song of this astounding album thus far. It begins with a slow almost ballad like ambience, then the song gets heavier but still keeps with the slow progression. A rather interesting track that did take a few tries to get used to, but not a bad track nonetheless in the right state of mind.

Silver Moonlight, goes along with the topic of Werewolf, hence the name of the track. One of a kind Within Temptation songs to feature backup growls, it was a track that really I was not expecting. The track was very well improved, since their EP. Dog Days is the eighth track off of this so far pretigious album. The song is not the heaviest off the album though the commercial appeal of the song does rate highly. It’s a very relaxed song instrumentally, but the lyrical content is a bit more intimate. I would say this song has an acquired mindset and taste to it, which in regards to the album theme, showcases another side that the band proves to the listener. A song that proved worthy in terms of guitar work and a kickass solo, Tell Me Why, was the song that told me that their instrumental side has improved. Everything from their own version of unique bass drumming, to the solo and the initial headbanging, this track is a strong one to have put towards the end of Hydra. This was a track I was not expecting from the band. Wow wow wow and wow, what a moving, emotional, profound, strong ballad to end Hydra. The Whole World Is Watching is the final track and it was the most perfect choice to end the album. Though the track is not metal, is certainly sends out a positive message. With the album going through themes of death, loss, love and more, this final track won more respect from me as a fan and listener. Many will not agree with the musical content, but I really recommend coming into this song with a very open mind, for it has been mentioned that the band does venture out into other sounds and genres. The song was done two ways with a different guest singer in each version. The one in this review and the one I favored features Dave Pirner, who is the lead singer for the band, Soul Asylum. The other version of the song is the same but features Piotr Rogucki on guest vocals instead. He fronts the popular Polish Rock band, Coma. I really felt the chemistry with Dave and Sharon in the video, and he had a better presence thus favoring this one more over the other, on top of my preference for his vocals as well. The song proves that anything is possible and one can overcome any obstacle. Nonetheless a superb choice as the final song. Phenomenal.

Overall I would give the album a 9 out of 10. The band proved that this is their best album to date. There was really nothing I could think of that the band could have improved on. A perfect blend of heavy elements, goth and metal themes, and lyrical themes, the album is thus far my favorite release of 2014. It may remain that way for a while based on what has been heard. The band will be touring the UK and Europe through May of this year. No tour dates for the Western Hemisphere have been set in motion. I am crossing my fingers the band makes it way to American Shores later this year. Over 3 million CD and DVD releases in 48 countries, 30 Gold and Platinum Awards, 2 World Music Awards and having played to over half a million people thus far the band has shown their succession over and over again. Watch out for every head in The Hydra, for each one will bring a different attitude to you ears. Keep that in mind. Stay Metal m/
